We have tested it

We tested the Denon receiver at the home of an old customer. The room was a 28-square-foot movie theatre where we tested the capabilities of the AV receiver with a pair of Definitive Technology D15 speakers. The acoustics of the room were almost ideal based on our measurements, thanks to the sound-absorbing panels on the walls and the bass traps in the corners, only a few diffusers would have been needed for a balanced sound.

The owner understood and selected one of our most popular diffusers, the parametric diffuser. Once they will be produced and mounted on the walls, the acoustics of the room will be absolutely flawless. Before purchasing speakers, carefully consider what type of speakers should you opt for, where and for what purpose you will use those speakers if you really want to achieve perfect sound quality.

Audyssey-settings

With Audyssey MultEQ XT32 calibration technology, we can further improve the sound, and after a little manual fine-tuning, we get really optimal soundings. Programs made to design room acoustics can be very useful, but it is important to mention that even these software are only worth something if we also apply acoustic treatment to the walls and ceiling, floor and glass surfaces of the given room! If the amplifier is used in a room with poor acoustics, the room correction program will not be able to achieve much improvement. If the room is treated according to best acoustic measurements, sounds good, you can create truly harmonious acoustics by fine-tuning using calibration programs.

The deep sounds were intense, defined, and airy, dynamics and detail also adequate. The receiver performed well even at low volumes. We used the amplifier mostly in Pure Direct mode, which provided us with the cleanest and most accurate performance. The high tones also sounded balanced, we couldn’t complain about the surround effect either. Good quality speakers are also essential to produce clear and even sound.

Verdict

This AV receiver will not disappoint those who love the brand. It brings the usual Denon style and quality in both appearance and sound. We experienced a pleasant, clear sound, and the surround effect was adequate. In terms of detail, dynamics and power, this isn’t the best home cinema receiver we’ve tested so far, but we haven’t detected any major flaws. If you want to use the receiver mostly for listening to music, you may want to look for a dedicated stereo receiver, but as a home theatre receiver, the X3700H is absolutely perfect for watching movies.

G.H.
