Yamaha offers a wide range of A-amplifiers to meet the different needs of customers. We’ve tested the Yamaha RX-V6A home cinema receiver before and had a really positive impression. This is why we were interested in what the RX-V4A model has to offer, which is available at an extremely affordable price.

According to the manufacturer, this device has advanced features such as Cinema DSP 3D, so users and this high-speed amplifier can expect unparalleled sound quality. It also has other advanced features such as future support for multiple HDMI inputs, HDR10 +, eARC, 4K / 120Hz and 8K. This AV receiver provides a stunning movie and gaming experience. The exterior design is simple and sleek, yet has a modern and fresh look. The room calibration function assesses the acoustics of the room before optimizing the sound output exactly for its location. With built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, you can connect wirelessly to your smart devices.

Design and construction

The sleek new design of the glossy black receiver makes it extremely attractive. It has a delicate, soft shape due to the rounded edges. The number of buttons has been reduced by Yamaha, providing a more transparent, clearer look. In the middle of the front panel there is a rather large volume button, to the right of it you will find the input selector button. Between the two buttons there are a two-line display, sockets, and touch buttons. At the bottom is a USB port, a YPAO microphone, and a headphone jack.

YPAO-microphone

The YPAO (Yamaha Parametric room Acoustic Optimiser) analyses the acoustics of a room and then makes precise adjustments to provide the best sound for the room.

Thanks to the high-speed amplifier, the receiver is capable of stable and clear sound, making it ideal for high-definition music or even to drive a home theatre. With this device, continuous signal transmission will always be ensured.

Works with Alexa and Google Assistant. With AirPlay 2, you can stream music from your Apple iOS device using Siri.

RX-V4A-inside

Yamaha Compressed Music Enhancer uses sophisticated digital signal processing using special algorithms to recover lost data, consequently, sounds always sound the way they should.

Cinema DSP 3D system

Yamaha’s proprietary Cinema DSP 3D system offers 17 DSP programs for a myriad of soundscapes, and you can create even theatrical or concert sounds, according to the manufacturer.

8K compatibility

The Yamaha model’s HDMI output and 4 inputs are also 8K-compatible. But of course, it is also capable of 4K / 120 Hz signal resolution. This model is also compatible with most advanced video formats, including HLG, HDR10, Dolby Vision and HDR10 +.

If you want a perfect gaming experience, the RX-V4A guarantees clear and flawless results using VRR and 4K / 120Hz. ALLM and QFT features ensure a hassle-free, dynamic and seamless gaming experience.

Function for wireless rear speakers

The function of the wireless rear speakers eliminates unnecessary cabling. This model can be combined with Yamaha MusicCast 20 or 50 speakers, so you won’t need to lay on the floor a lot of cables.

MusicCast system

With Yamaha MusicCast’s audio system, we can also control all compatible products with a smartphone, Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa audio. Whether you want to play the same music or a different music in different rooms, the Yamaha RX-V4A makes it possible thanks to the MusicCast app.

Sound quality and performance

This AV receiver has a DSP program that provides 17 sound fields. Yamaha collects sound field data from music clubs and famous concert halls around the world and can produce a concert or stage experience in a home environment.

The menu is transparent and logical, although it could be a little more detailed. The sound is realistic, airy, precise and definite. The bass is adequate, but still lags a bit behind the more expensive instruments. If you’re a fan of more intense, throbbing basses, it’s also worth getting a subwoofer.

By analyzing the room acoustics, the receiver’s acoustic optimiser calibrates the sound to provide the right sound for the room. It restores the compressed sound, so we can hear the original sound clearly and faithfully. Of course, the use of a room calibration program is not enough for perfect acoustics, we must also think about the acoustic treatment of the walls, ceiling, floor and window surfaces in the room!

The room where the receiver was tested was a medium-sized home theatre. The acoustics of were optimal, with diffuser front panels on the walls and broadband sound panels for ideal sound handling. An acoustic rug has been placed on the floor, which not only improved the sound, but also provided with homely, warm atmosphere. We connected the receiver to a pair of Magnat Transplus 1500 speakers during the test.

Summary

This receiver offers excellent sound quality at an affordable price. Its appearance is modern, youthful, although some parts seem a bit cheap in appearance. (For example, the volume button isn’t very stable or very flashy, but we usually control the device with the remote anyway, so it’s not a big deal.) Would you want more intense basses, then choose the big brother of the RX-V4A, the Yamaha RX-V6A. The RX-V4A adapts the sound exactly to the room. The Music Cast application allows you to eliminate all problems with cabling and the associated clutter. The downside is the lack of compatibility with Dolby Atmos, but at this price it still fits. The RX-V4A still has a lot of extra features.
